To be Kryptonian is to persevere. That was what her father had always told Kara. They survive, living off the hope of a better tomorrow. It was how her people survived the destruction of Krypton, their feet clinging to an asteroid city, a last remnant of home. Kara was born and raised on that rock and she grew up watching everyone die trying to turn that asteroid into a living Krypton. Hope doesn't last forever.
Her father spent two decades trying to save Krypton and all he managed to save was her.
Hope felt like a false promise after that.
