1.

The first pair of glasses she had ever worn were a gift from Kal-El.

The device had confused her at first, but they were apparently common on Earth . She knew that Kal-El wore glasses in his human guise as Clark, but she didn’t understand why he wanted her to wear them. She had no desire to pretend to be human. But Kal-El had explained they were lead-lined and suddenly Kara no longer had to worry about screaming visions of faded flesh to bones, mangled veins, and beating hearts assaulting her senses.

She was grateful, but still, they weren’t her style.

2.

Kal-El was strange. The strangest man that Kara had ever met. At first, she had assumed it was because he was raised by humans—all of his strangeness was just because of the Earth, but during her first weeks on the planet she had watched countless movies and traveled across the world. She studied humanity, studied its languages and culture and customs. And from it she deduced that Kal-El was weird even by human standards.

She deduced that he was a dork.

And that the glasses he had given her were far too dorky for her tastes. That wouldn’t do.

3.

The clear eyeglasses that Kal-El had given Kara would quickly gather dust as Kara experimented with many different styles of glasses. The first pair she had found were circle-framed, red-tinted sunglasses. She disliked the way the red-tint had made the Earth’s blue sky look like a pale imitation of Krypton’s gorgeous red sky and quickly tossed that pair. The next pair she tried were square-framed with black lenses. They made her face look strange and light still peeked through the edges of her vision. Eventually, she found a pair of oversized sunglasses that completely shielded her eyes from the world.

4.

Kal-El stared at her eyes a lot. She wasn’t sure what he was looking for, but the sunglasses became Kara’s favorite method for hiding from him. He couldn’t judge or pity her for her red-rimmed, puffy eyes if he couldn’t see them. She could hide all of it away behind a pair of dark lenses. She supposed that was why he wore glasses; he didn’t need help controlling his powers, but he still needed them to hide away from the world.

That colorful costume might turn her into a hero, but the sunglasses turned her into someone even more powerful.
